Head of the Department: Dr. Anupa Singh
The department of Economics Deva Nagri College, Meerut was established on July 8, 1958. In the beginning, the then Principal of this college Dr. K.D. Agarwal started teaching the Economics classes and part-time teachers were also invited from Meerut College, Meerut. In 1961, Dr. S.Lal was appointed as a permanent teacher but he left after some time. Till 1966 it remained only as a degree department with an optional subject available to B.Sc (P.C.M) group students. In 1966, P.G. classes were started and Dr. H.C. Verma was appointed as the Head of the Department. Since then new lecturers were appointed from time to time. Dr. S.A. Rizvi, Dr. Virendra Singh, Dr. R.C. Agarwal, Dr. J.C. Pant, Dr. R.S. Gupta and prof N.K. Taneja were appointed as permanent lecturers. Till the session 2007-08 there were four permanent teachers in the Department with Dr. J.C. Pant as Head and the others were Ms. Anupa Singh, Dr. Nidhi Sharma and Dr. Kavita Saxena. However Dr. Nidhi Sharma resigned in March 2008 as she was appointed Reader in Mahila Mahavidhyalaya, BHU. Dr. J.C. Pant, Head of the Department since 1992, retired in June, 2008. At present there are two permanent teachers in the department with Dr. Anupa Singh as Associate Professor & Head of the Department and Dr. Kavita Saxena as Associate Professor.
The Department of Economics with its well-qualified and experienced teachers provides thorough and in-depth training in theoretical and applied economics through its various courses of study. Ever since the recognition of economic factors as the key ingredients of the development of a society or human development, the importance of economics as a subject of study has grown tremendously. The increase in the demand for professional economists is emerging and new areas are the natural outcome of this development. In addition to the commercial and manufacturing enterprises, both the public and the private sector, absorbing a bulk of the manpower trained in economics, today there is hardly any social, administrative or developmental organization where the services of economics are not needed.

Admission in B.Sc (Economics) and M.A. (Economics) is centralized by Ch. Charan Singh University, Meerut on Merit basis. Admission in Ph.D Programme is done through Research Entrance Test (RET) conducted by Ch. Charan Singh University, Meerut.
There is research facility in the Department. Quality of research work is an important criteria is research supervision. There are two research supervisors/ guides in the department. Besides the Central Library, the department is maintaining its own library where original and standard books are kept. The department is well equipped with all the necessary equipments for modern teaching. It has a computer, desktop, laptop, three in one printer, photocopier & scanner and LCD projector. The department has a well maintained Wifi system and the teachers as well as the students can freely avail the internet facility.
The results of the department have been exemplary. A number of P.G. students secured positions in the University Merit List. Three students secured first position in M.A. (Economics) in the University Merit List and received Gold Medal in the year 2008, 2015 & 2016 respectively. The department has collaboration with the Economics Department of Meerut College, Meerut and Ismail National Mahila (P.G.) College, Meerut and the students participate in the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities of both the colleges.
The faculty members have always strived for maintaining highest degree of class-room teaching and imparting value-oriented education. The Dissertation and Assignments done by P.G. students cover a wide variety of socio-economic topics and many studies are based on primary data (actual field surveys) which depict the real picture of our economy and society, its problems and suggestions for their solutions. Many studies at Ph.D level provide a data base for making new economic policies or reformulation of the older ones.
The department has organized four National Seminars in November’ 2006, January’ 2010 (both UGC Sponsored) and in February’ 2011 and March’ 2012. Three Minor Research Projects sanctioned by UGC, two in 2004 and one in 2011 were completed by the faculty members. The department has produced about 75 Ph.Ds and some are going on. Attending National and International Seminars and Conferences and presenting papers in them is a regular practice of the teachers of the department. About 76 National Seminars/ Conferences, 09 International Seminars/ Conferences, 08 National Workshops and 02 Symposium have been attended by faculty members and 74 Research papers have been presented in them. The teachers also pay attention to publication work. 19 research articles and papers have been published in International/National /Regional level Journals and 31 in Edited Books. In order to update themselves, the faculty members attend a number of Orientation Programmes, Refresher Courses, Faculty Development Programmes, HRD Programmes and Workshops. Till now they have attended 15 such Courses and Programmes. Special and Invited Lectures are also delivered by the faculty members Besides teaching, the faculty members also contribute in other academic and administrative activities of the College and fulfill their responsibilities as members of various Committees of the College.
There is a Society of the Department by the name of Economics Association, Deva Nagri College, Meerut which is very old. It is formed by the students of M.A. (Economics) and it conducts various co-curricular, extra-curricular & extension activities and social awareness programme like debates, group discussion, speech competition, poster and slogan writing competitions on socially relevant themes & economic issues besides cultural programmes. Three students of the Department received Guru Dakshina Scholarship of Rs. 5000/- given to the all rounder students by the College in the year 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively.
The Department of Economics has a glorious past. Since its beginning it has produced a good chain of bank officers, managers, officers in defence, police and para-military forces, teachers, lecturers, professors, researchers and administrators.
